We do not get tired of repeating that you need to start a dog only after considering everything in advance, weighing all the pros and cons. However, there are “risk categories” who are better off avoiding getting a dog. Who shouldn’t get a dog and when?

A dog should not be started in the following cases:

  • During pregnancy. During this period, you want to take care of someone, take responsibility, and a young family, in anticipation of a child, often gets a dog. However, often after the birth of a child, the attitude towards the dog changes. According to statistics, dogs are most often disposed of due to the birth of a child.
  • A family with children under 5 years old, especially if it is a puppy or a dog with an unknown past. Raising a puppy or adapting an adult dog is not an easy and energy-intensive job, almost the same as raising a small child. Are you ready to raise two (or more) children at the same time? And if you do not know how an adult dog perceives children, behavioral correction may also be needed. Many, alas, are not ready for such an investment of time and effort, but they understand this only after the puppy or adult dog has already appeared in the house. The risk of return in this case is very high.
  • If you take a dog on a chain / into an aviary without proper walking and communication with the pet. There are dogs for whom such a life suits, but on condition that the owners fulfill a number of conditions: walking not only in a “protected area”, intellectual activity, etc., however, such cases are rather an exception than a rule. If these requirements are not met, the dog will be deeply unhappy.

If you have definitely decided that you need a dog, you need to know how to properly educate and train it. And our video courses on raising and training dogs with humane methods will help you with this.
