Wool can tell us about the health of a dog: dull, tousled, brittle hair can indicate the onset of various diseases, including dermatological ones. Therefore, proper care is not only appearance, but also health.

There are six types of wool:

  1. Long (collie, shih tzu, Yorkshire terrier, golden retriever).
  2. Medium (Labrador, Central Asian Shepherd, German Shepherd).
  3. Smooth (dachshund, basenji, bulldogs).
  4. Rigid (West Highland White Terrier, Airedale Terrier, Giant Schnauzer).
  5. Curly (Bichon Frize, Poodle, Kerry Blue Terrier, Bedlington Terrier).
  6. Exotic wool (bullets, commander, Mexican naked).

Long hair looks very beautiful, but it requires serious care. The main rule is regular combing. All basic care is built on it, because with insufficient combing, tangles quickly form. There are many tools for combing this type of coat, but the best choice is a comb with sparse teeth. It is better if it is made from natural materials. Also, the area around the eyes, around the anus, between the paw pads needs special care. This wool needs to be sheared. Bathing a long-haired dog is worth it as it gets dirty. For washing, choose products suitable for the type of wool. Professional groomers can help you with this choice.

Coarse hair care

The rough coat is famous for the fact that, with proper care, rough-haired dogs do not shed. Hard coat care is based on three pillars: combing, cutting, trimming. But the main thing is still trimming (plucking out dead hair), because such hair does not fall out by itself. You can learn how to do this procedure yourself. But initially you should contact a specialist and observe his work.

Care for the smooth coat of dogs

One of the easiest to take care of. It is enough to wash a smooth-haired dog as it gets dirty and comb it once a week. During the shedding period, a smooth-haired dog needs to be brushed a little more often. You will need a massage rubber brush-mitt.

Medium length hair care

For dogs with such hair, periods of molting are most characteristic. These dogs are fairly easy to care for. They need washing as they get dirty. For combing, you will need a medium-hard slicker brush and a furminator. It is necessary to comb the dog once a week, during molting – daily.

exotic hair care

Owners of exotic wool cannot be attributed to any subgroup. For example, the Mexican hairless dog is completely devoid of hair, and the Komondor has hair that twists into bundles (dreadlocks). They are extremely specific in care. In order to learn how to care for such dogs, you need to contact a specialist who will train you. Learning is necessary so as not to harm your pet.

A well-groomed, clean dog with a shiny coat pleases the eye not only of the owner, but also of those around him.
