cichlids Amérika

American cichlids is the collective name for two large groups of cichlids from South and Central America. Despite the geographical proximity, they differ significantly in terms of conditions of detention and behavior, therefore they are rarely kept together.

Cichlids of South America

They inhabit the vast basin of the Amazon River and some other river systems of the tropical and equatorial belts that flow into the Atlantic Ocean. They inhabit small streams and channels flowing under the canopy of the rainforest. The typical habitat is shallow waters with a slow current, littered with fallen vegetation (leaves, fruits), tree branches, snags. kusabab decomposition of organics and the release of tannins, the water acquires a characteristic “tea” shade.

eusi

Keeping in aquariums is quite simple, with the exception of some demanding species, such as Discus. They prefer soft slightly acidic water, subdued lighting levels, soft substrates and an abundance of aquatic plants.

Most South American cichlids are considered peaceful and calm species, able to get along with many other freshwater species. Tetras, which are naturally found in the same habitat, will become excellent aquarium neighbors. South American cichlids are caring parents, so during the spawning period and during the subsequent care of offspring, they become quite aggressive, but if the aquarium is large enough, then there will be no problems.

Cichlids of Central and North America

They inhabit small rivers and lakes and swamps associated with them. Many representatives Amérika Tengah cichlids are found in brackish waters, as well as in river deltas that flow into the ocean. The habitat varies from rapid mountain streams with rocky rapids to calm backwaters with dense aquatic vegetation. The area is rich in carbonates, so water conditions have high rates of hardness.

eusi

With the right setup of the aquarium, the maintenance will not cause much trouble. Much more problems are associated with the search for compatible fish species. For the most part, Central American cichlids have complex intraspecific relationships, a warlike disposition and are aggressive towards other fish, therefore they are kept in species aquariums or in very large tanks. In this case, the cichlids will occupy a certain area, which they will fiercely guard, and the rest of the fish will stay in the unoccupied part. However, avoiding conflicts and skirmishes will not be easy.
